What Gives It Structure

The Base

    Tallow is rendered fat from grass-fed, grass-finished cattle suet. Its fatty acid profile (primarily oleic acid ~47%, palmitic acid ~26%, and stearic acid ~14%) closely mirrors the lipid composition of the stratum corneum. Applied topically, these fats are structurally compatible with the skin's own lipid matrix. Our tallow is never RBD (refined, bleached, or deodorized), which preserves naturally occurring fat-soluble compounds present in the raw fat. Sourced exclusively from grass-fed, grass-finished suet through named supplier cooperatives. Unlike most single-function ingredients, tallow acts as both an emollient, filling intercellular spaces in the stratum corneum, and an occlusive, forming a breathable layer that slows transepidermal water loss.

    Beeswax is a natural wax produced by honeybees, composed primarily of esters of long-chain fatty acids and alcohols. In an anhydrous formula it provides structure, controls texture, and forms a breathable layer on the skin's surface that slows transepidermal water loss without fully occluding the skin. It contributes to the firm-yet-whipped consistency of the formula.

    Arrowroot is a fine starch derived from the rhizomes of the Maranta arundinacea plant, sourced from Thailand. In a tallow-based formula it functions as a texture modifier, absorbing surface lipids on application and reducing the heavy feel that can accompany high-fat topicals. The result is a lighter, drier finish on the skin. It is fragrance-free, inert, and non-irritating.

    Calendula flowers are dried whole flowers and petals that are infused directly into the tallow base prior to formulation. The infusion process transfers the flower's oil-soluble constituents into the fat, which are then present in the finished product. Calendula has a long history of use in topical preparations and is a widely recognized ingredient in cosmetic formulation. Non-GMO, non-irradiated. Product of Egypt, packed in California.

    Vanilla oleoresin is a semi-solid concentrate produced from vanilla bean pods, retaining the aromatic compounds (primarily vanillin) along with other naturally occurring constituents of the bean. It is oil-soluble and disperses evenly in tallow-based formulas. It functions as a fragrance component in the Espresso Vanilla variant, contributing the warm, sweet base note characteristic of that product.

    Coffee Bean CO2 is a certified organic total extract of Coffea arabica seeds, produced via supercritical CO2 extraction. It is an aromatic fatty oil retaining both volatile and non-volatile constituents of the coffee bean, including cafestol, a diterpene that comprises the primary non-saponifiable fraction of the oil. It is fully oil-soluble and integrates into the tallow base. It contributes the roasted coffee aroma to the Espresso Vanilla variant and adds fat-soluble seed constituents to the lipid base.
